By revealing a particular regressive capacity of the ego-superego relationship, humor, according to Freud, challenges the very essence of the superego. A precise exploration shows that the humoristic process relies both on the archaic, maternal pole of the superego and on its post-oedipal, bi-identificatory and impersonal register. This complexity opens perspectives on how humor is brought into play in the treatment process.
