Transformations in Hallucinosis

Exploring the domain beyond representation, and ways of enumerating its relations with the psychic apparatus, is a new undertaking for psychoanalysis. This requires new observations as well as new theories. In this connection, the author examines the mechanism of repudiation (Verwerfung) insofar as this, by entailing the present-day expulsion of affect and representation, leads to the elimination of psychic material and its substitution by a sensory reality, leading to the avoidance of frustration and the realisation of the object of desire. The author suggests that repudiation gives rise to the process Bion described as transformation in hallucinosis, as a means of gaining independence by pre-determining an internal and external reality with objects and signifiers that, for the subject, are emanations from his own “superior capacity” for creation. As hallucinosis is expressed mainly as a form of action, this has important clinical implications for analytic work.
