Returning to his 1982 article, ‘Le psychophobe’ (the psychophobe), the author tries to connect, in his patient, the phobia of thought with its position as a phobogenic incestuous object for a mother previously subjected to incest. Although all anxiety goes back to a situation of real external danger for the ego, the phobic position can involve a complex entanglement of real and drive-related dangers. Confronted with situations of enigma, the creation of a theory of compromise avoids the dilemma between a phobia of thought or a counter-phobic thought.
