Concerning the Death Drive

Based on the case of Solange quoted in Scarfone’s paper, the author returns to Freud’s theory of anxiety to consider the absence of the concept of the death drive in Scarfone’s argument. Anxiety is a concept that recurs and steadily develops in the course of Freud’s works, especially in the second theory of the drives, which accords a particular importance to the role of the death drive in the constitution of psychic processes. It is therefore in the register of drive dualism, where the death drive is to be taken into account, that the author considers Solange’s symptom.
