The author offers an analysis of Freudian questions concerning the particularities of the process of memory as well as its destiny in the context of the compulsion to repeat. Repeti-tion is seen as akin to reminiscence and not to recollection. It is an “anti-memory” or “ante-memory” (Barbier). Freud raises questions in particular about the notion of compulsive fixation which modifies radically the tendency to repetition, a force of anchoring and thrust, a force of instinctual coercion (Zwang) that escapes the subject’s control, condensing and sometimes cancelling time, thereby placing the complexity of the work with neurotics at the heart of the analyst’s method.
