The author examines the complex dialectic that is established between the analyst’s personal path of development, his meetings with patients, and the construction of his theoretical apparatus. In his own case, this path has enabled him to take into account the importance what lies beyond the pleasure principle in analytic and psychosomatic practice, and has led him to extend the notion of the analyst’s maternal function (Marty) by linking it up with that of primary maternal preoccupation (Winnicott).
