Reflection on the void in psychoanalysis: From horror of the void to the void as a creator of metaphors

From the phenomenological point of view, the void is present in almost all psychic organisations: neurosis of the void, blank psychosis (Green) and borderline states. Green’s notion of negative hallucination highlights the importance of the construction of the “framing structure” ( structure encadrante) in the analysis of these patients, a structure that is necessary if the void is to appear during the session. From a metapsychological point of view and with reference to two clinical examples, the author then shows horror and the resistance to the appearance of the void during the session. The analytic process can only unfold if this void is accepted by the analytic duo. The void thus approximates to the notion of vacuity as a potential emergence of meaning.
