Political and Cultural Practices of Dressing

We propose a historiographical essay about studies on Greek and Roman costume in the Antiquity, especially in relation to their political and cultural uses. The analysis of the bibliography is structured on one hand on the recent perspectives of research, and on another hand, on specific topics like clothing and nudity as identity labels, gestures connected to clothes (dressing up, undressing), and finally norms and transgressions expressed through clothes. We argue for an anthropological approach by looking at clothes or lack of clothes in their sociological and cultural dimensions.
