After the sudden death of his father, Beckett managed break away from his mother, who regarded him with contempt, in order to do an analysis in London with Bion. Full of anxiety to do with his creative impotence, he spoke of his life as a “negation of life”. “Nothing to be done” says Estragon in Waiting for Godot. From psychoanalytic experience out of public view, each of these great authors drew rich parallel intuitions, one in an abstract conceptual mode, the other in a literary mode.
