The funerals of kings have attracted the interest of numerous historians, but those of women (and especially queens) have been singularly neglected. An expense account preserved in the Archives nationales casts important light on the funeral of Charlotte of Savoy. Charlotte was an unassuming woman whose political importance was insignificant. After preparing her testament (which I edit in an appendix), she died at Amboise on 1 December 1483 and was buried two weeks later in the collegiate church of Notre-Dame of Cléry beside her husband Louis XI. Her son Charles VIII ordered that she have all the funerary honors traditionally accorded to sovereigns, and the expense account shows that his orders were fully executed. Charlotte is the first queen known to have had an effigy displayed at her funeral. Adorned with the traditional regalia, sheltered by a dais, the effigy depicted the queen in majesty, demonstrating the political role that queens might play after their deaths.
