Interview with Arnaud Desplechin

In this interview, Arnaud Desplechin, a contemporary French filmmaker, shares his discovery of psychoanalysis, the place it occupies in the economy of his creation and the search for meaning that motivates it. He develops his point of view concerning the question of the unconscious of the characters, and his interest in their recurrence through his different films. Cinema, like psychoanalysis, is presented in its dimension as a quest for truth. And the author himself becomes a spectator of the arrival of a meaning that escapes him and that he seeks through the incarnation, the putting into images, of what inhabits him internally. The status and possible objects of representation are questioned based on the different themes and issues that run through his films, which leads Arnaud Desplechin to return to the crucial importance of Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah.
