Recourse to the body, especially the gaze and touching, in psychoanalytic body psychotherapy, has often aroused suspicion concerning seduction, eroticisation, and suggestion; it is, however, necessary in order to return to the foundations of the psychic apparatus. The elaboration of the analyst’s countertransference allows him or her to avoid pitfalls. At the pre-genital stage, the act of touching awakens the manifestations of experience, a tactile echo re-energizing psychic functioning.
