The African Labor University provided labor union training dedicated to the education of future labor union executives. This paper presents a history of this experiment. It follows trainees from diverse African countries and describes the courses they took and how they perceived them. The history of this school, which was financed by the communist World Federation of Trade Unions and managed by Maurice Gastaud, an activist member of the French CGT labor union, enables a better understanding of Guinea during the 1960s and more generally of Cold War strategies on the African continent. The school also shows the globalization of militant practices and knowledge in an African continent that remains undecided between East and West.
