In this text, the author wishes to share her daily clinical experience with analysands who choose or refuse to speak their mother tongue during the session. She makes the hypothesis that the choice of language in the session represents a symptomatic modality, among many others, which gives expression to an underlying traumatic dimension. If the psychic work is efficient, the elaboration of the traumatic dimension, during the analysis, enables these patients to mourn their objects of childhood and their experiences of loss, to move towards a resolution of the oedipal conflict, and to acquire an impersonal superego. The symptoms that are expressed through the language of the analysis can thus be transformed, making way for a more flexible psychic functioning in which both languages, the mother tongue and that of the adopted country, coexist more harmoniously, expressing experiences that are both mixed and differentiated, while always remaining in contact with affect.languages of the analysis, mother tongue, language of the adopted country, traumatic, work of mourning, work of distortion, infantile, impersonal superego.
