This article examines the work undertaken by international organizations over the last few decades to mainstream the environment into national accounting. At the crossroads of multiple controversies over how to measure well-being and adapt to economic globalization/regionalization, sustainability (and its environmental stakes) is arguably the most complex challenge faced by the United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA) today. The question nevertheless arises as to whether attempting to mainstream sustainability values into national accounting should be accompanied by a new breed of statistics, one that focuses more on protecting the environment and the concomitant attempt to move beyond a predatory and inegalitarian capitalist model.
