When passion comes to the forefront of the analytical scene, it tends to blur the boundaries between idealization and sublimation. How, then, in contexts where the question of the ideal becomes central to the treatment, can we attempt to identify one or more sublimatory processes? If sublimation remains a change of sexual aim, it questions the manner of achieving it by means of the detour via the object, through its encounter as well as its mourning. Julien’s analysis confronts us with this paradox, between idealization and hatred of the object.
