In his report, “The lawyers of the id” to the 2023 CPLF in Lausanne, Olivier Bonard defends the idea that the superego is a part of the ego that plays a third-party role as the id’s lawyer. His dialectic between an ideal superego and a forbidding superego in the analyst and the patient makes it possible to link regressive narcissism, idealized omnipotence, and a narcissism that integrates reality-testing. If we manage to use it in analysis, the superego allows us to shift the prohibitions linked to the idealized and internalized parental imagos. The superego can then give up idealizing what is forbidden, gain access to the traces of parental care, protection and love and link them to aggression in an ambivalent relationship. Freeing up exaggerated superego-based aspects then becomes an aim of analysis.
