“The symptom of our beast is intelligent”

This article takes as its starting point Michel de M’Uzan’s affirmation, “The symptom is stupid like a beast”, which should become the “symptom of the beast”, of our animality. Based on Pierre Marty’s questions about the localization of certain somatizations and intra-uterine conflicts in allergies, as well as the contributions of Christophe Dejours and Claude Smadja, somatic pathology may be understood as a construction of the drive when it cannot find a psychic or behavioural solution to its conflictual tension. Its future somatic pathway is from this point of view guided from the outset by interactions between the baby’s genetic programme and the mother’s personal and transgenerational unconscious. Somatic fixations due to illnesses will occur throughout life and are as it were, pre-symbolic anchor-points expressing suspensions in the evolutionary progression of the drive, but which can be interpreted and resolved.
