Cet article analyse, dans le cadre de la correspondance entre Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz et Denis Papin, le recours à l’expérience de pensée comme modalité de résolution de la controverse. La controverse engagée d’abord publiquement entre Leibniz et Papin porte sur l’estimation de la puissance motrice. Mon hypothèse interprétative est que l’expérience de pensée est un moyen de construire un territoire dialogique commun entre des protagonistes engagés dans des philosophies naturelles bien différentes et par là de résoudre, pour un temps, le conflit.

This paper analyzes the use of thought experiments as a method of dispute resolution on the basis of the correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Denis Papin. The dispute between Leibniz and Papin, which was initially conducted publicly, concerned the estimation of motive power. My interpretative hypothesis is that thought experiments are a way of creating dialogical common ground between protagonists who defend different natural philosophies, and thus temporarily solving the conflict.
