In the early modern Republic of letters, the exchange of letters was considered a token of mutual friendship. Opponents in a scientific controversy thus rarely shared letters. Nevertheless, correspondence networks played a pivotal role in learned disputes. As the case of Albrecht von Haller shows, they were important tools to gather information, coordinate actions, build alliances, and ultimately mediate the conflict and reconciliate the opponents.
