This article provides an overview of the intellectual trajectory of Jean Gayon, presenting the diversity of his interests, and placing in the foreground a reading of his last book, Knowledge of life today. Thus, we approach his work via its object Darwinism and the theory of biology as well as by its style, marked by the heritage of Georges Canguilhem and its ambivalent relationship to “historical epistemology”. We also try to bring to light lesser-known aspects of his work that reveal that Jean Gayon was more than just a historian and philosopher of biology.
