‪The epigraphic and literary evidence of Antonius ‪‪neos Dionysos‪‪ is consistent enough, despite the partiality of the pro-Augustan sources, to attest that the triumvir was one of the first figures of power to adopt the formula. The article analyses the way in which he developed this religious expression of a new power, in the context of the Roman civil wars, through successive experiments receptive to the reaction of the Greek cities, from Athens to Alexandria, and probably in Ephesus and Tarsus, in the decade of the 30s BC. The idea is that it was Antony, through Rome, who, if not invented the formula, at least disseminated it in the Eastern part of the Empire, even though his defeat prevented it from being introduced in Rome.‪
