School-Family Collaboration: What Competencies Do Quebec Parents Consider They Need in Order to Get Involved?

Research has generated a large consensus on the positive effects of school-family-community on school achievement. In Quebec, the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports and parent associations encourage schools to strengthen this collaboration. In fact, parental involvement remains rather weak and their insufficient competences are often cited by themselves and by teachers. The identification of parental competences necessary for their involvement seems thus essential. Research with parents (n = 115) of children 5- to 16-year old children was conducted in Quebec to identify these competences. The results indicated that, according to parents, 32 competences are necessary, 14 of which were judged to be very important, but these differed according to the type of involvement.
