China and the Black Sea area

Despite the development of political, economic and financial relations with the riparian countries, the People’s Republic of China’s presence and influence in the Black Sea area remains limited. The Xi administration’s focus on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has not led to a significant increase in trade or investment despite high local expectations. Despite its rhetoric, Beijing does not seem to have made any real commitment, which has contributed to dampening the enthusiasm of the countries in this area. Turkey is to some extent an exception. There are certainly convergences of interests between the PRC and certain Black Sea countries. However, there are also countless obstacles to Beijing’s penetration. In the end, the region remains marginal for the PRC compared to other areas.
