East-West Trade and Caviar: the case of the Petrossian Company

Founded in Paris by Armenians from the Russian Empire in the late 1920s, the Petrossian Company sold caviar imported from the Soviet shores of the Caspian Sea. This article traces the entrepreneurial epic of two brothers who became privileged business partners of the USSR while they had just escaped from it. While the story of this company has usually been presented as a saga by journalists, this article bases its analysis upon diplomatic records and police sources, as well as family archives.
