This paper investigates Clément Rosset’s use of quotation through the case of his relationship to Montaigne. In support of his philosophy, Rosset only refers to philosophers who, in his view, agree with his own philosophical positions and claims; such a method has the effect of distorting and influencing Rosset’s interpretation of the history of philosophy. But this art of quotation proves nevertheless rich and fruitful and allows meaningful points of view on the philosophers considered. Rosset’s reading of Montaigne is typical of his manner and provides a significant instance of his art.
