This article examines the concept of “ethics” in French culture from an international point of view, via a comparative and historical analysis. The study focuses on the different adaptations of the notion of “ethics” in German-speaking, English-speaking, and French-speaking cultures, and on the different ways that connections between economic, political, and ethical considerations have evolved in these three cultures. In today’s globalized world, this comparative approach makes it possible, on the one hand, to avoid the trap of French ethnocentrism in academic debate and, on the other hand, to reveal the utility of a macro-ethical perspective complementing the micro/meso-ethical approach.
