The transmission of a sense of responsibility brings two contradictory dynamics into dialogue: 1) parents’ desire to transmit ways of life, values, and “ready-made” meaning that aims to secure their children’s future; and 2) the necessity to make room for real experiential learning, which is the occasion for practicing and educating a necessary free sense of responsibility. We show how the control culture we inherit paradoxically enough exacerbates this tension. Gender relations surely are at the root of this current difficulty, as well as its possible solutions.
