Organizational ethnography: From the past to the future

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2013. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Recently, we are seeing a strong revival of ethnographic research in studies on organizational theories and management. While ethnographic research was previously focused on analyzing clearly delimited organizational situations, it is now giving rise to a diversity of new research forms and practices adapted to the fluid contemporary organizational context. Two ethnographic studies, one conducted in the 1990s in a high-end clothing firm and the other conducted in the 2000s during an expedition to an extreme environment, are described in this paper, and their common and divergent points are highlighted. This comparison shows that even if conditions change, the essence of ethnographic research, whether the traditional or new version, remains the researcher’s meeting with the Other. The article offers a reflection on the methodological, theoretical, and dissemination challenges and issues associated with the practice of organizational ethnography.
