Unlikely reforms and impossible status quo, such are the terms of the Iranian equation. Indeed, reporting on Iran’s situation today, three years before the end of President Mohammad Khatami’s second term of office, amounts to writing a chronicle of aggravated tensions. This remark comes at a time when Iran is in urgent need of radical reforms. At a time when the conservatives threaten to introduce a state of emergency—in other words, to stage a coup d’état—the aim of the present text is to pinpoint some of the dividing lines that run across today’s Iran and that may soon shift abruptly, thus shaping tomorrow’s Iran.
