In France the law on the veil was a much discussed and highly controversial issue, as it conflicted with various sensitivities. However, its perception in the Middle East was mostly hidden from public debate, even though it was one of the most important issues in circulation. The adoption by the French government of rules contradictory to religious precepts, perceived as universal, was indeed likely to lead to an uprising of public opinions in the region. But behind the active dispute within the Arab media, a very particular public criticism is taking shape.
