Working on Thomas Bernhard’s five autobiographical texts, we consider the notion of origin as an autobiographical foundation Bernhard reverses by starting from the end, namely the suicide and death of others. Indifferent to the imperatives of sincerity and authenticity, Bernhard gives his past the strength of fiction, the impossibility of reaching the truth being one of the only possible truths about oneself.
