Salman Rushdie and the Uses of Classical Literature
Type de matériel :
41
This paper takes as its starting point Salman Rushdie’s use of references to classical literature in his novels in order to explore the role played by classical references in postcolonial literature. Apuleius, Ovid, and Lucretius are important authors for The Satanic Verses and The Ground Beneath Her Feet. This brings to light the ability of myths to renew interpretations and to interpret the contemporary world. References to classical literature enable writers to rethink the relationship between literature, history, and empire. This highlights the protean power of ancient myths.
