The Paradisiacal Adam, Adam the Sinner, and Adam the Pilgrim: An interpretative essay on the Ovide Moralisé xi, 1099–2995

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2022. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article takes as a starting point M. Possamaï-Pérez’s observation that Achilles stands for Christ in book xii of the Ovide moralisé. Possamaï-Pérez’s work is undoubtedly a significant contribution to the understanding of the meaning of Trojan material in the work. However, no similar study has been done on the figure of Peleus. The present article argues that the typological interpretation of the Trojan material can be extended to book xi. Indeed, an analysis of v. 1099–2995 shows that the adventures of Achilles’ father symbolise the destiny of Adam, so that a double typology is established: Peleus-Achilles/Adam-Christ.
