Preserving the Memory of Medieval Written Documents Circulating on the Private Market: the Guard Database

This brief note introduces the Guard project, an acronym for Guarantee Unpreserved Archives Remain Documented. Designed as a collaborative wiki-type database, Guard aims to permanently archive as much information as possible about medieval written documents circulating on the private market. It is based on a simple principle : to collect and compile all available data (including photographs) on charters, rolls, manuscripts, or fragments that pass through auction houses or virtual auction rooms, often on an ephemeral basis. This tool provides researchers with dozens of documents that are usually very difficult to access and that quickly disappear from view.
