In all her works, Zofia Romanowicz paints life as a series of counterpoints between life/death (physical, mental, sentimental, personal, and historical), freedom/imprisonment, disclosure/secret, oblivion/memory, and de/reconstruction of reality. Her principal character is a woman, a Nazi camp survivor. This character appears first as a young girl, then a young woman, a mother, and finally an old woman. She narrates the traumas she has suffered and her survival mechanisms. This quasi-symbiotic thematic and structural continuity paints a complete portrait of the life of a survivor in search of her identity.
