Engineered to connect Western Xinjiang to Central Asia through Kyrgyzstan, since 1996, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project remains outstanding. Despite its importance for the three countries and a massive demand for infrastructures in Central Asia, fundamental disagreements have slowed down this project. This rail link however is highly strategic for China to both interconnect the Middle East as well as simplify trade.
