From Ukraine to Central Asia: On the consequences of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Samarkand

Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the 22nd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was held in September 2022 in Samarkand. The meeting showed signs of China and the Central Asian republics distancing themselves from Russia, while other partners, such as India, Iran and Turkey, tried to take advantage of what seems to be a Russian loss of influence in the region. What are the causes of this dynamic? This article analyses the speeches of the participants and the official communiqués issued at the end of the various meetings, as well as the media coverage of this event.
