From Don Juan to Kasperl: The popularization of a European myth in Central European puppet theater

A major figure in the European puppet repertoire, the character of Don Juan was widespread in Central Europe throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, thanks to the German language, which ensured its circulation from Italy and France to Hungary, the Czech lands, and Denmark. This process of appropriation reflects the changes that thoroughly affected the theatrical and literary field of this period, between popular and high culture, by showing how the development of a national culture in those countries dealt with issues of oral transmission or entertainment. The evolution of the Don Juan character enables us to trace the invention of a new aesthetic category, that of popular art.
