Neuropsychological evaluations for aging multicultural populations: Which tests should be used?

Given the growing diversity (educational, linguistic, and cultural) of the patients admitted to memory clinics in mainland France, the use of neuropsychological tests adapted to these populations is imperative. Having worked with a wide array of patients over the past decade, the memory clinic team at the Avicenne Hospital has been instrumental in the development, validation, and creation of norms for tests evaluating episodic memory (i.e., TNI-93 and TMA-93) allowing for the detection of dementia and/or, more specifically, Alzheimer’s Disease. This organization, along with other international teams, has played a major role in addressing this important resource gap. The aims of this narrative review are as follows: to provide an overview of the recent advances in tests developed for older populations with a low level of education and/or from a multicultural background, and to present more recent developments that may offer promising clinical prospects. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the psychologist’s clinical approach, with neuropsychological tests being just one tool in their arsenal, especially in a cross-cultural context.
