Knowing about the structures of the unconscious and the related processes is necessary to the analyst, whether in individual or group analysis, in order to orientate his “listening” and interpretations. Conversely, we learn from our clinical, individual and group practice, and it enriches our metapsychological knowledge. Within a group analysis situation, instinctive cathexis is manifest in an obvious way in certain intersubjective movements. Alternating binding and unbinding processes are witness to the bipolarity of instincts.
