Greek and Jewish ancient literature implied that members of the same family had the same fate and thought patterns. This conception was swept aside by the awakening of individual consciousness and rationality, expressed by the Cartesian cogito and scientific somatic medicine. Today, however, the intuition of a relative psychic symbiosis has emerged with the development of psychoanalytic treatment of children and psychotic patients. This led to the contemporary development of family therapies and of a more relational conception of psychopathology.
