Treating Psychotherapeutic Groups in Psychiatric Hospitals

Psychoanalytic group therapy in psychiatric institutions is able to contain anxieties and establish a transitional space, which allows a capacity for reverie to develop. The interplay of intersubjectivity and identifications provides psychical confrontations. The expression of internal realities will be brought to light by the group’s feelings and various instances of transferences. However, the specificity of analytical groups overlaps with the specificity of groups in the institutional setting. It is necessary to account for the interaction between the institutional setting and the group setting. Careful consideration and theorization are required with regard to the make-up of the group and to the other treatment modalities to be used in conjunction with it.
