International research on shared physical custody comes from multiple disciplines (psychology, social sciences, family law, economics, social policies, etc.) and approaches this practice from complementary angles (the well-being of children and parents, the legal procedure, the relationship to social norms, economic security, maintaining long-term bounds, sharing social benefits, etc.) This article offers a synthetic overview of this data, required for a global vision of the advantages and limits of this custody arrangement and for the identification of the public policy issues surrounding it.
