From Poor Housing to the Household?

This study focuses on a “feminist housing” experiment which emerged in 2021 in Brussels and provides ten individual housing units to homeless or poorly housed women. Studying this case through the notion of “household” highlights the effects of such a project: by bringing together women sharing a common condition (single women, retirees or single mothers accompanied by their children), collective housing serves as a support for the development of mutual aid and care practices, articulating family ties with neighbourhood bonds, without, however, producing a common sense of belonging that stops at its strict boundaries.
