By considering the body, rather than consciousness, as the proper object of psychology, Ribot, taking up a tradition originating in 19th century physiology and pathology, elaborated the notion of a “sense of the body” to account for the unity of the self. This notion would play an important role within psychology and psychoanalysis during the 20th century.
