The Group as Creator of Representation

In the first section of the article, using excerpts of clinical material from group therapy sessions with psychotic patients, I attempt to illustrate that a function of the group was to create representation, an effort of “psychic figuration” which emerged during the sessions. In the second section, using the same material, I describe how the group operated as a body shell which served to resist the attacks made on links. This shield enabled fragments of speech to be gathered together, as they sought a territory, an aim, and ultimately, a meaning. Finally, I emphasize the links among gesture, motor function and temporality in a body which is gradually getting in touch with its feelings, and is no longer cut off from affect.
