On the Exposure of a Pact of Denial in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of a Couple

The present author describes the process of a case of psychoanalytic couple’s therapy, using theories of unconscious alliance, notably of a pact of denial. Throughout the analysis and discussion of the various stages of this psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which took place over several years, the author describes the process by means of which the members of the couple, but even more generally the therapeutic “neo-group,” can go so far as to expose their pact of denial. This pact turned out to be what enabled the couple to become a family at the birth of their first daughter, who suffered from Down Syndrome. More particularly, the author dwells on the analysis of a dream and the associations to it, which demonstrate the couple’s new capacity to open the Pandora’s box of monstrous and unnameable emotion, repressed and/or denied until then. The outcome was the ability of members of the couple to finally experience themselves as “good-enough” parents, in dealing with their “not-good enough” daughter.
