From Violence Endured to Violence Acted Out in School

The violent acts discussed here were observed in the school setting. They were recounted in analytic groups with multi-disciplinary professional teams. Some of the ambiguities which are constitutive of institutions and of the contradictory messages which they convey were clarified. For example, there is the incongruity between the invitation to learn and grow, on the one hand, and the absence of a future, which seems the only sure thing, on the other, and there are the insufficiently thought out social and group forms of the organization of work and cooperation.Since so many things are going on when the group is just beginning, while everyone is seeking his or her place, our attention turned to the scenario of breaking into the group and establishing contact, and to our first remarks on the rules of the game. Two clinical vignettes were the basis of part of our analyses. Some theoretical-clinical hypotheses emerged. In particular, it appears that unprecedented violence acted out in the here-and-now is, for the subject, a defense against the violence which he or she has already endured, about which we know nothing except for what it arouses in us. Such superimposing of scenes is brought on by the painful confrontation with the subjectivity of many individuals, and by the diffusion of the transference which is only possible in a group. In certain conditions of verbal exchange, this leads to a change in affect. Thus, the existence of many types of psychoanalytic work is reaffirmed.
