Members of a group develop and use their own theory of the origin of mental suffering, a theory which is part of the group’s culture. It is an implicit theory, used by the group members without ever having been formalized, organized, or clearly formulated. It is important that the analyst recognize its content and characteristics. The analyst capable of recognizing them can also better understand how the group functions in attempting to achieve a cure. More generally, such recognition also allows the analyst to understand the image that the group members have of themselves as a group.
